Don't Play Left Handed Electric Guitar - Learn the Right Way

JamoramaIf you’re a left handed person do not, whatever you do try and learn left handed electric guitar. There is variety of reasons why I stress this warning and in this article I will try to outline some of the key reasons.

  • It’s not easier!
First, you will never be able to get a good lesson. This is because most all the online tutorials are based on right handed guitarists. It’s the same situation when it comes to actual guitar teachers.

There are not many left handed electric guitarists out there so they will find it really tricky to try and teach guitar the wrong way round.

  • It Looks odd!
If you plan to play on stage at any point, the chances are people will question the reasons why you play with the guitar the ' wrong' way around.  It also doesn't look good on camera...Can you think of any famous left handed electric guitarists?

  • You will be limited for sure!
Yes that's right... there are not many guitars that have been built for left handed use. So not only will you be limited in terms of what guitars you can buy, but you will also be left wondering why they cost so much.

Once again, a lower demand equals a higher price. This might not be a problem for people with a little more money to spend, but the overall quality of left handed electric guitars is noticeable lower than that of right handed guitars.

Perhaps I have been too harsh on left handed electric guitar players

If you want to play with your left hand, there is nothing stopping you. But there is no reason why you can’t play with your right hand.

You may just find it easier to play with your left hand, and if that is the case and you don't mind enduring the difficulties already expressed in this article, I would say go ahead. But for most, the simple fact being taught will be hard is enough of a put off.

I have actually tried both types of guitar, and even though I am left handed, I found playing with my right hand much easier.

For some reason the right hand is more adapted for strumming and therefore I play much better with a right handed guitar. My best advice is to go to a guitar store and weigh up the pro's and con's of both types of guitar.

To be quite honest, it doesn't really matter what type of guitar you choose to play because at the end of the day as long as you’re actually playing, it doesn't matter!

The very fact you’re playing an instrument is enough to justify praise. Playing guitar is a great skill and when well refined can be an actual art that has the ability to convey emotions and feeling other instruments can’t achieve.  Even if it is a left handed electric guitar!
